Lounge Access Denied? The Quarter Spend Rule

2026-10-09 • Credwiser Research Desk

You reach the airport early. You walk up to the lounge desk, card in hand. The staff member takes one look and says no.

If this has happened to you, you're not alone. It's happening to a lot of travellers in India. The card promises lounge access, but on many cards that access is no longer automatic.

One common culprit is the previous-quarter spend rule. Let's understand how it works, so the airport never surprises you again.

What Is the Previous-Quarter Spend Rule?

Many banks now tie your lounge visits to your past spending. Spend a minimum amount in the previous calendar quarter, and your complimentary visits unlock. Miss the target, and they stay locked.

A calendar quarter means:

  • January to March
  • April to June
  • July to September
  • October to December

The required spend varies a lot; as a rough example, some cards ask for ₹35,000 to ₹75,000 in a quarter. That's an example range, not a promise. Your number lives in your card's terms.

Hit the target and you get visits in the following quarter. Miss it and your visits may be blocked, even if the app still shows "lounge access" on your card.

Travel cards like Axis Atlas spell out rules like these on the card page. You can browse more travel options on /cards.

Quarter Is Not Your Billing Cycle

This is where most people trip up.

Your billing cycle is monthly. Maybe it runs from the 10th to the 9th, maybe some other dates your bank picked.

The lounge rule doesn't care. It uses calendar quarters.

Say your flight is on 10 May. The bank looks at your January to March spends. Whatever you spent in April doesn't count. Flying on 5 April? The check quarter ended on 31 March, so a last-minute April shopping spree won't save you.

Not All Spends Count Towards the Target

You could spend a fortune and still fail, because many spends simply don't count towards the target.

Common exclusions on some cards include:

  • Rent payments
  • Wallet loading
  • EMI transactions
  • Fuel spends on some cards
  • Cash withdrawals
  • Fees, interest and GST charges

Every card draws this line differently. Don't assume a big spend automatically qualifies.

Here's a painful example. Your target is ₹50,000 for the quarter. You spend ₹55,000 in total, which feels safe. But ₹20,000 of it was rent and ₹10,000 was wallet loading. Your counted spend is only ₹25,000. You don't qualify.

Track your eligible spends separately, the way the bank sees them.

One more thing. Credit card fees carry 18% GST in India, but fees and GST never count as eligible spends. Only genuine purchases do.

Fees and rules keep changing, so check your bank's latest schedule of charges / MITC.

Guest Visits Are Counted Separately

Your card may give you a limited number of free visits per quarter. Guests are a different story. Guest visits are often counted separately, and on many cards they aren't free at all.

Say your card allows 2 free visits. You bring a guest along on one trip. That single visit to the desk can burn both your free visits at once. Your next trip in the same quarter becomes chargeable.

Some cards charge for guests from the very first visit. Others allow guests only on higher variants. Either way, check the guest policy before you travel, not at the desk with your family standing behind you.

Card Access vs App and QR Access

There are two common ways to walk into a lounge.

The first is the classic one: show your physical card at the desk, and the staff swipes or checks it.

The second is through lounge programmes inside apps. You get a QR code in your banking app or a partner app and show that at the desk instead.

Both routes follow the same eligibility rules. A QR code doesn't sneak past the spend rule. If you're not eligible, the QR may refuse to generate, or it may open as paid access.

Some lounges accept only one of the two methods. So carry both options when you can, and log in to the app before you reach the airport.

Your Card Variant and Network Matter

Not every lounge accepts every card. It depends on:

  • Your exact card variant
  • Your card network: RuPay, Visa or Mastercard
  • The lounge's tie-ups at that terminal

A premium variant might sail through while a basic variant from the same bank gets turned away.

The same airport can have different lists at different terminals, and international terminals use yet another list.

So look up the lounge list for your card and your network. Check it for your departure terminal, not just the city.

Start with travel cards on Credwiser cards and read the lounge terms carefully before you shortlist.

What to Do at the Lounge Desk

Denied at the desk? Stay calm and work through this checklist.

Check your eligibility proof

Open your bank app. Look for lounge eligibility or your visit balance. Some banks also send an SMS once your visits unlock after the quarter ends. That message is useful proof.

Carry the physical card

Many lounges insist on the physical card. A photo of it may not work. A virtual card number may not work either.

Match the name on the boarding pass

The name on your card has to match your boarding pass. Even small spelling differences can get you rejected, and arguing rarely helps.

Ask for the exact reason

Was it the spend rule? Your visit limit? Network acceptance? Ask politely. Knowing the exact reason tells you what to fix before the next trip.

Decide on paid entry carefully

The desk may offer paid entry. Check the price before you agree. Sometimes paying directly at the lounge is cheaper. Either way, don't pay twice for the same entry.

How to Plan Spends Before a Trip

Good lounge access is planned months ahead, not days. Here's a simple plan that works.

Step 1: Note your travel quarter

Flying in August? Your check quarter is April to June. Put that deadline in your calendar today.

Step 2: Find your card's target

Read the target in the MITC or on the card page. Write down which spends are excluded.

Step 3: Spread spends, do not rush

Spend normally across the quarter. Don't dump one giant excluded payment at the end and hope for the best. Keep a small buffer above the target.

If the target is ₹50,000, aim for ₹55,000 in eligible spends. A refund later can drag you below the line. The buffer is your insurance.

Step 4: Avoid refunds near quarter end

A refund reduces your eligible total. If a big order might get returned, buy it early in the quarter, or keep it out of your lounge plan completely.

Step 5: Verify before you fly

Once the quarter ends, open the app. Confirm your visits show as unlocked. Take a screenshot, just in case. Then travel without that small knot of worry.

When the Rule Does Not Apply

Not every card works this way. Some cards still give visits with no spend target at all. Some unlock visits after activation spends. And some charge-only cards give no free visits, ever.

Don't go by what a friend's card does. Your variant may follow completely different terms. Your own MITC always beats general advice.

And if lounge access is your top priority, compare carefully. A card with fewer conditions might suit you far better than a flashier one with a target you'll never hit.

FAQs

Why was my lounge access denied even though my card has this benefit?

The likely reason is the previous-quarter spend rule. You may not have met the minimum eligible spend. Or your visits for this quarter are over. Check eligibility in your bank app and MITC.

Which spends do not count for the lounge spend target?

Rent, wallet loading, EMI and fuel are common exclusions. The exact list depends on your card. Fees, interest and GST also never count. Read the exclusion list before you plan spends.

Can I use a QR code instead of my physical card?

In many lounges, yes, if the app generates a valid QR. But the same spend and visit rules still apply. Some lounges still ask for the physical card. Carry both to be safe.

My flight is next month. Can I spend now and qualify?

It depends on the quarter dates. If next month is in a new quarter, current spends may count for the quarter after. If the check quarter has already closed, new spends will not help for this trip. Plan one quarter in advance whenever possible.
