Best UPI Apps in India: S to D Tier List With Pros, Cons & Market Share Data

2026-10-10 • Credwiser Research Desk

Open any shop in India today and you will hear the same sound. Beep. Payment done.

In September 2026 alone, UPI processed 24.07 billion transactions worth Rs 29.37 lakh crore. That is over 800 million payments every single day. But here is the part nobody talks about: almost all of that money moves through just three apps.

So which app should live on your home screen? And is the big app always the right app?

We ranked 18 UPI apps into S, A, B, C and D tiers, checked what each one actually does well, and dug into the NPCI numbers. Some results will surprise you. The fourth biggest app in India right now is not the one you think.

How We Ranked the Tiers

Full disclosure first: this is Credwiser's editorial ranking. It is not an official NPCI list.

We judged every app on five things:

  • NPCI market share (August 2026 volume data is the latest available)
  • Feature depth: RuPay credit card on UPI, UPI Lite, international UPI, wallet, bill payments
  • Reliability and payment success record
  • Rewards that are actually worth something
  • How clean and honest the app experience is (ads, clutter, spam)

One more thing. Every app on this list runs on the same NPCI rails. Your money sits in your bank account, not inside the app. A smaller app does not put your money at extra risk. It only changes your experience around the payment.

Now let us go tier by tier.

S Tier: The Two Kings

Only two apps earn the S. Between them, they carried 77.9% of all UPI volume in August 2026. That is not a lead. That is a duopoly.

PhonePe

The default UPI app of India. If a QR code exists anywhere, from a metro station to a village tea stall, PhonePe probably processed the payment before you arrived. It supports RuPay credit cards on UPI, UPI Lite for small payments, international UPI in supported countries, and its own wallet.

Pros:

  • The widest acceptance and one of the strongest success rates in the business
  • Full feature stack: RuPay credit card linking, UPI Lite, international payments, wallet
  • Works smoothly with almost every bank, big or small
  • Useful extras packed in: bill payments, insurance, FASTag, metro cards

Cons:

  • The home screen keeps getting busier. Finding the scanner takes longer than it should.
  • Rewards are mostly scratch cards that give you a few rupees or a coupon you will never use
  • Wallet money needs full KYC and comes with wallet rules

Google Pay

The cleanest UPI experience in India. Open, scan, pay, done. Google Pay (GPay) skips the clutter, supports RuPay credit cards on UPI, UPI Lite and international UPI, and borrows Google's security muscle to warn you about suspicious requests.

Pros:

  • Fastest, simplest interface of any major app
  • Strong fraud warnings before you pay a suspicious contact
  • UPI Lite means small payments need no PIN at all
  • Works with international UPI in supported countries

Cons:

  • The golden days of rewards are over. Expect small offers, not celebrations.
  • No built-in wallet
  • When your bank's server is down, GPay can only show you an error, and that happens more than anyone admits

A Tier: Excellent, With One Catch Each

These four could be your main app tomorrow. Each one gives up something small to the S tier.

Paytm

The everything app. UPI, wallet, FASTag, movie tickets, travel, gold, loans. Paytm had a rough regulatory patch in 2024 and now runs its UPI through partner banks, but the app itself never left most people's phones. It supports RuPay credit cards, UPI Lite and a proper wallet.

Pros:

  • The deepest ecosystem: wallet, bills, travel, shopping, all in one place
  • UPI Lite plus RuPay credit card support
  • Paytm's merchant network means the Soundbox greets you in every second shop

Cons:

  • The app feels heavy. Too many banners, too many pushes to buy something.
  • Wallet rules and KYC checks can surprise you at the wrong moment
  • Rewards exist but are scattered across points, coupons and cashback offers

CRED

CRED began as a credit card bill payment app for people with high credit scores, then quietly built a serious UPI product. It supports RuPay credit cards on UPI with extra cashback on those spends, and the interface is the most premium of the lot. Its UPI market share is still under 1%, which keeps it out of S.

Pros:

  • Best-in-class experience for credit card users: bill reminders, card management, RuPay card UPI spends
  • CRED coins and CRED Pay offers make rewards feel real, not decorative
  • Clean, ad-light design

Cons:

  • Built for members, not the mass market. The full experience assumes you hold cards and pay bills on time.
  • UPI is one feature among many, so pure payment speed loses to PhonePe and GPay
  • No built-in wallet

BHIM

NPCI built UPI, and BHIM is NPCI's own app. That means new features often land here first, ads do not land here at all, and your data is not the product. BHIM supports RuPay credit cards, UPI Lite and international UPI, and its share has climbed back to about 1% with fresh cashback campaigns.

Pros:

  • Zero ads, zero cross-selling, minimal data collection
  • UPI Lite and RuPay credit card support from day one of both features
  • The safest pick if privacy matters more than offers

Cons:

  • The interface is functional, not delightful
  • Merchant and biller coverage inside the app is thinner than the big three
  • Rewards are occasional campaigns, not an everyday programme

Amazon Pay

If half your money already goes to Amazon, this one makes sense. Amazon Pay sits inside the Amazon app, pays with your bank account or Amazon Pay balance, supports RuPay credit cards on UPI, and throws its best cashback at Amazon orders.

Pros:

  • Cashback lands as Amazon Pay balance, which you will actually spend
  • Simple, trustworthy flow with Amazon's customer support behind it
  • RuPay credit card linking supported

Cons:

  • UPI lives inside a shopping app, so quick scans feel slower
  • Rewards outside the Amazon ecosystem are thin
  • Not the app for someone who wants payments to be the main event

B Tier: Rising Stars and Solid Bank Apps

This is where the interesting fight is. The B tier holds both the fastest climbers and the best bank-owned apps.

Navi

The quiet climber. Navi went from almost nothing to 4.4% of all UPI volume by August 2026, making it the fourth largest UPI app in India. It pairs payments with mutual funds and lending, and keeps its UPI experience rewarding with coins and offers.

Pros:

  • Real growth with real numbers: 4.4% volume share and rising
  • Cashback and rewards positioning on everyday UPI spends
  • One app for payments, investments and credit

Cons:

  • Still building a track record next to decade-old rivals
  • Feature depth (UPI Lite, international) is not clearly at par with the S tier yet
  • Support network is smaller when something goes wrong

Super.money

Flipkart's payments bet. Super.money offers up to 5% cashback on UPI transactions through its campaigns and cards, including an FD-backed RuPay card route for people building credit. That aggression took it to 1.7% volume share in quick time, though it slipped slightly from 1.9% in July.

Pros:

  • The most aggressive cashback offers in UPI right now
  • Clean, young interface without the clutter of older apps
  • Flipkart ecosystem benefits if you shop there

Cons:

  • Cashback comes with caps and conditions. Always read the offer before counting your savings.
  • Very young app, still proving itself
  • Ecosystem value drops if you do not use Flipkart

WhatsApp Pay

Paying inside the chat where you already spend your day is a powerful idea. WhatsApp Pay is simple, and Meta recently added full bill payments inside WhatsApp. But its UPI volume share is still only around 0.7%, and the feature set is thin compared to rivals.

Pros:

  • No new app to learn. If you can send a message, you can pay.
  • Clean payment flow inside chats and groups
  • Bill payments across 30 categories added in 2026

Cons:

  • Easy to forget it exists. Discovery inside WhatsApp is weak.
  • RuPay credit card linking is not clearly supported yet. Do not count on it today.
  • Rewards are close to non-existent

ICICI iMobile

If your salary lands in ICICI, iMobile is a surprisingly complete home: accounts, cards, UPI, bills, investments. It supports RuPay credit card linking and avoids any third-party data sharing with ad networks.

Pros:

  • Everything ICICI in one secure place
  • RuPay credit card on UPI supported
  • No ads, bank-grade support when payments fail

Cons:

  • The app is heavy and the UPI flow takes more taps than a fintech app
  • Best only if ICICI is your primary bank
  • Feature updates arrive slower than PhonePe's

HDFC PayZapp

HDFC's answer: wallet plus UPI plus cards, with SmartBuy deals on shopping and travel. RuPay credit card linking is supported, and HDFC customers get the smoothest version of it.

Pros:

  • Wallet, UPI and HDFC cards under one roof
  • SmartBuy offers can be genuinely good on flights and shopping
  • Bank-backed reliability

Cons:

  • Most value is locked to HDFC customers
  • The app has been redesigned often, and not always for the better
  • UPI polish still trails the big third-party apps

C Tier: Good at One Thing

Nothing here is bad. Each C tier app does one job well and general payments passably.

Kiwi

Kiwi is built around a single idea: credit on UPI. The app gives you a virtual RuPay credit card (issued with its partner bank) and pays you around 1.5% cashback on UPI spends, rising with its paid Neon membership tiers. If you want a credit card that lives inside UPI, start your research here, then compare it with regular cards on our list of the best RuPay credit cards for UPI.

Pros:

  • Purpose-built for RuPay credit on UPI, with real cashback
  • Lifetime-free card positioning
  • Simple, focused app

Cons:

  • You need card approval, so it is not instant for everyone
  • Top cashback rates need the paid membership and high spends
  • Useful mainly for its own card, not as your general UPI app

Jupiter

A neobank with a clean app, a debit card with its own rewards, and spend analytics people genuinely like. UPI works fine, it is just not the star of the show.

Pros:

  • Beautiful, simple banking experience
  • Good spend tracking and insights
  • Rewards on its debit card spends

Cons:

  • UPI is a supporting feature, not the hero
  • Smaller support and ATM footprint than big banks
  • Rewards on plain UPI payments are limited

Slice

Slice built its name with young users and a card that split bills painlessly. The product has been reshaped a few times since, and today slice super offers up to 3% cashback on spends. Charming, but check what the current version of the product actually promises before you commit.

Pros:

  • Friendly design that first-time credit users understand
  • Cashback on spends through its card offers
  • Popular with students and young professionals

Cons:

  • The product has changed shape repeatedly, so old reviews may mislead you
  • UPI volumes are small
  • Credit features depend on eligibility

Axis Mobile (Freecharge)

Freecharge, once a recharge pioneer, now runs on Axis Bank's rails, and Axis Mobile is the bank's own app. Axis customers can manage accounts, cards and UPI spends here, and offers show up regularly.

Pros:

  • Direct Axis Bank integration for account holders
  • Regular offers on recharges and bills
  • Bank-backed support

Cons:

  • Neither app feels UPI-first
  • Interface and speed trail the fintech leaders
  • Most value stays inside the Axis ecosystem

SBI YONO / BHIM SBI Pay

SBI is India's biggest bank, so its apps matter by default. YONO tries to be a super app for banking, shopping and investing, while BHIM SBI Pay is the lighter UPI-focused option. Both get the job done; neither wins on speed.

Pros:

  • Works with the largest customer base in Indian banking
  • NPCI features arrive reliably, if not quickly
  • No advertising clutter

Cons:

  • YONO is heavy, and quick QR payments feel buried under menus
  • App stability complaints are a running theme in reviews
  • UPI experience is built for existing SBI customers, not converts

D Tier: Niche or Fading on UPI Rails

D tier does not mean scam or failure. It means: as a UPI app in 2026, these two are either built for a narrow audience or have lost the UPI race.

Mobikwik

One of India's wallet pioneers, and the first fintech to support RuPay credit cards on UPI. Its Pocket UPI idea, paying at UPI QR codes from wallet balance, is genuinely clever. But the UPI giants ran away with the market, and Mobikwik's UPI share is now a rounding error.

Pros:

  • Wallet features and Pocket UPI are still handy for wallet loyalists
  • RuPay credit card support arrived early here
  • Bill payments and recharges are comprehensive

Cons:

  • Credit offers (ZIP and loans) are pushed hard inside the app
  • Wallet money comes with wallet rules, including KYC and possible charges
  • As a pure UPI app, it no longer gives you a reason to switch

FamApp (FamPay)

FamApp is designed for teenagers and families: parents load money, kids learn to spend, UPI included. Within that narrow job, it does well. As a general UPI app for adults, it simply is not built for you.

Pros:

  • Parental controls and teen-friendly design are best in class
  • A safe way for families to start kids on digital money
  • Numberless card options for minors

Cons:

  • Audience is deliberately narrow
  • UPI features are limited next to full-scale apps
  • Not suitable as your primary payment app

UPI Market Share: The Hard Numbers

Feelings aside, here is what NPCI's August 2026 data says. (September's total was 24.07 billion transactions worth Rs 29.37 lakh crore; app-wise breakup for September was not out at the time of writing.)

AppVolume share, Aug 2026Value share, Aug 2026
PhonePe45.6%47.8%
Google Pay32.3%33.8%
Paytm8.0%6.9%
Navi4.4%1.8%
Super.money1.7%<1%
BHIM1.0%<1%
Everyone else (each)<1%<1%

Read that table again. The top three hold 85.9% of volume. The top two alone hold 77.9%. Every app you have ever heard of, plus every bank app in the country, fights over the remaining 14%.

That concentration is why NPCI wrote a rule: no single app should cross 30% of UPI volume. The deadline to comply is 31 December 2026, and both PhonePe and Google Pay sit well above the line today. NPCI has moved this deadline before, so do not expect your app to stop working in January. But it explains why smaller apps are throwing cashback at you. They are not being generous. They are being strategic.

One more change worth knowing: from 15 October 2026, a new UPI MDR framework charges 0.4% on specified merchant payments above Rs 2,000, capped at Rs 300. Paying a friend stays free, and your payments to merchants stay free for you. The fee sits on the merchant side, and it may slowly change which apps can afford big cashback offers. RuPay, by the way, remains the only credit card network allowed on UPI. That exclusivity is confirmed policy, not a rumour.

Two honest notes on this table. First, UPI Lite is fully confirmed only for the big four plus BHIM; several other apps have rolled it out quietly or bank by bank, so we marked them Not clear rather than guessing. Second, for RuPay credit card linking, your issuing bank also has to be live on the feature. If linking fails, the app is not always the problem. This is the same pattern we explained in why you did not get 5 percent cashback: the headline feature exists, the small rules decide whether you get it.

How to Choose Your UPI App

Forget "best app" lists for a second. Choose by who you are.

You hold (or want) a RuPay credit card. Your app must link it properly and show the card at checkout. PhonePe, Google Pay, BHIM, CRED and Kiwi are the safe lane. Then pick the right plastic: our guide to the best RuPay credit cards for UPI breaks down which cards pay you back on UPI spends, and you can compare cards side by side before applying.

You chase rewards. Super.money's up to 5% cashback campaigns, CRED's coins and offers, and Kiwi's card cashback are where the real money is. Big apps will give you scratch cards and disappointment. Just remember: cashback offers fund customer acquisition, and they shrink without warning. We saw this exact trap in card land too, read why you did not get 5 percent cashback before you trust any headline rate.

You trust only your bank. iMobile if you are ICICI, PayZapp if you are HDFC, YONO or BHIM SBI Pay if you are SBI. You lose some speed and polish, and you gain one throat to choke when a payment fails.

You want simple and private. BHIM. No ads, no shopping mall attached, NPCI's own app. Google Pay is the runner-up if you want more polish with less noise.

Our default advice for everyone else: keep two apps. One S tier app as your daily driver, and BHIM or a bank app as backup for the day your main app or bank server sulks. Payments fail at the worst moments, and a second app costs you nothing. If choosing feels like homework, the 30 second wizard on Credwiser will match a card to your spends just as fast.

FAQs

Which UPI app is the best in India right now?

For most people, PhonePe or Google Pay. PhonePe if you want every feature and the widest acceptance, Google Pay if you want the fastest, cleanest payment flow. Both support RuPay credit cards and UPI Lite. Whichever you pick, keep BHIM or your bank app as a backup.

Can I use my credit card with WhatsApp Pay?

As of writing, WhatsApp Pay has not clearly documented RuPay credit card linking, and it did not appear on NPCI-supported lists we checked. Bank account UPI works fine there. If credit on UPI is your goal, use PhonePe, Google Pay, BHIM or CRED, and pick from the cards that actually support it.

Which apps support UPI Lite?

Confirmed widely: PhonePe, Google Pay, Paytm and BHIM. UPI Lite lets you pay small amounts (up to Rs 1,000 per payment, wallet balance up to Rs 5,000) without entering your PIN, and it keeps your bank statement clean. Other apps are rolling it out unevenly, bank by bank, so check inside your app before assuming.

Is my money safe in a small UPI app?

Yes, in the way that matters. UPI apps do not hold your money; your bank does, and every app settles through NPCI. A small app can have weaker support or slower features, but your balance does not sit on its balance sheet. Your real risks are the usual ones: sharing OTPs, approving collect requests from strangers, and screen-sharing scams.

Will the 30% market share cap break PhonePe or Google Pay?

Almost certainly not overnight. The cap's deadline is 31 December 2026 and it has been extended before. NPCI wants balance, not chaos, so expect a phased approach, like slowing new user additions for the giants rather than cutting off existing users. Your practical move: none. Just keep two apps, like we said.

Why do small apps give so much cashback?

Because UPI payments themselves earn apps almost nothing. Cashback is the price of buying you as a customer, so they can sell you credit, insurance or shopping later. Enjoy it while it lasts, but do not build your financial life around an offer that can be withdrawn any month. The new merchant fee framework from October 2026 may make some apps rethink how generous they can be.

Pick the app that fits your life, not the one with the loudest ad. And if your RuPay card is doing the heavy lifting on UPI, make sure the card itself deserves your spends. Compare the top cards or do a two minute card match with the wizard before your next big month of spending.

Always verify current fees and offers in the issuer MITC before applying. Compare cards →
